Lost My Writing
This story is about losing your writing
I tell stories from the front and back lines of the newsroom. This is a story about losing my writing.
I used to scribble in notebooks before I could write. Writing was the superpower that MS took away from me before I started at NYU journalism school. My hands were so numb that I couldn’t find the right way to hold a pen. Typing was never an issue. But I was determined to get my handwriting back. So I played hangman with my boyfriend (now my husband) daily.
I slowly re-learned how to write before I moved to New York City.
My favorite part of this story isn’t that I taught myself how to write again. My favorite fact is that my handwriting stayed the same. It looks the same as it did before I lost my ability to write.
In newsrooms, you will see me with myriad notebooks, vigorously scribbling copious notes. It helps my brain remember important information.
With or without handwriting, writing is an essential skill I’ve been developing my whole life and perfecting throughout my career.
